About Us

Dickie recently sat down and answered 20 questions about what's Sector Five Radio and what's been happening lately. For over 12 years, Dickie Shannon and his wife Angel hosted KODJ’s Married With Microphones morning show. Now he cracks the mic open again in search of the strange and bizarre world of sci-fi and paranormal activities.

Here’s 20 questions with Dickie Shannon:

• What is Sector 5?

The easiest way to describe Sector 5 is what it’s not. It’s not name calling, partisan-political positioning and grandstanding, it’s not about making fun of people and what they believe. It’s about embracing the natural and amazing world around us including the supernatural, paranormal, alien activity, inexplicable and unusual events, SF/Fantasy books and authors, video games, high tech gear. It’s a complete geek world and I know there’s lots of us out there!

• So far, so good? (team)

Outstanding! I’ve assembled a great team of people like John the comic book guy, Michelle’s Weird Science, our phone guy, Spacey Dave with News of the Universe. Of course, we also have our producer Captain Proton… who lives in a completely different dimension!

• Who’s been on the show so far?

Our first guest was NASA Ambassador to Utah and astronomer Patrick Wiggins. We’ve also had Mayan calendar expert Joe Zug, Utah fantasy author John Brown and the Paranormal Investigation Team of Utah. The list keeps growing!

• Do you have a favorite story so far?

Oh yeah. I loved the Ghost Hunting stories from the PI Team. They brought in what’s called EVP or electronic voice phenomena. Some of the audio from the Wasatch locations they have visited was absolutely chilling.

• Many people have compared what you’re putting together with Art Bell’s Coast To Coast.

Really? I am completely and totally honored by that. I’m a huge Art Bell fan and have been for years, but our show operates on a slightly different level. While we cover some of the same topics, I have a team of experts in the studio each week to cover the latest news on graphic novels, video games, other science breakthroughs, gadgets and gear.

• Who would be your dream guest?

Oh…I only get one? Well, I guess first it would have to be George Lucas. I’d like to know what kind of mind creates Star Wars!

• Anyone else?

Do I get to pick dead people? Okay…seriously, I could get the ghost hunters back. Wouldn’t it be great to interview Albert Einstein and Gene Roddenberry?

• Radio has changed so much, especially with voice tracking and very few live disc jockeys. How many years have you been in radio broadcasting and how do you feel about these changes?

I’ve spent 38 years. Now remember, I started as a mere child! As far as the changes go, since 1996 and the deregulation of the radio industry, about 70% of the radio jobs have simply disappeared. In the process, so many stations that used to be great have fallen to a level of mediocrity with very little compelling and passionate programming for people to choose from.

• What highlights all those years? Is there anything in particular?

Really, my favorite fondest memories…and not because I’m here in Utah…have been at 94.1 KODJ from 1995 to 2007. Angel and I not only had a wonderful morning show called Married With Microphones, we had so much fun with our listeners at Oldiesfest each summer at Franklin-Covey Field.

• Bringing it back to Sector 5…how are your listeners responding?

All 12 of my listeners are very excited! Okay…just kidding…but we are a young show, a work in progress. So far, everyone loves what they hear.

• Talk radio has a reputation for being confrontational. Are you expecting any of that to develop with your new show?

Only if we get Bill Gates and Steven Jobs on the same program. I’d love to hear them go for it!

• Yeah, me too! But really, do you expect a lot of controversy surrounding the show?

Not controversy, but unbridled enthusiasm. The type of people that might be bitten by the Sector 5 Radio bug are sometimes the quiet ones or the wallflowers with nowhere else to go. But believe me, they’re very smart, very informed and they have a lot to say about the topics we discuss.

• What kind of interactivity do your listeners have access to?

We have a great website with video and audio, links and personal blogs. It’s www.sectorfiveradio.com. We also have a Facebook fanpage and the K-TALK studio line is 801-254-5855.

• So you’re trying to build a community of geeks? Is that okay to say?

Yeah. Absolutely. Geeks are proud to be geeks and I’m proud to say that while I may be a little bit old school, I think of myself as a geek too. I’m curious about all the amazing things that we can and can’t hear or see around us.

• If someone has a guest suggestion or comments about Sector 5, how do they get that information to you?

I’d love to hear guest suggestions…it’s important that people convey their interests to me. Best way is through our website contact page, and please remember to include your contact information. You can also leave a comment on our Facebook fanpage, or send us a tweet, @sectorfiveradio.

• Are there any subjects that are off-limits?

Politics. We do not do politics.

•Sector 5 is still in its early stage. How does it feel to be back on the radio again?

I’m livin’ large and loving it. Radio is in my blood and it feels good to be back on the airwaves.

• Were you surprised that you could find a home for your new show?

No. Not really. I believe there is a distinct audience not being served by today’s radio stations. I believe we fill a serious need for this kind of information and entertainment.

• Will Angel be joining you?

Actually, she’s already on the show. She’s the voice of the Sector 5 computer, Moira. I’d love to have her on the show but she’s pretty busy working for Associated Food Stores and chasing her own dreams of helping people with stress. Go visit her website, tranquility circle dot com…and she’s got a facebook page too!

• What are your future plans for Sector 5?

World domination (laughs)!!!!
